ACCESS TO CARNWETHERS B&B AND THE COTTAGES

Carnwethers is located to the North of St. Mary’s.

We are approached by an unmade road, which is no more than 100 metres from the island’s tarmac road. We have a concrete driveway for taxis a level path to the house.

ACCESS INFORMATION FOR ALL COTTAGES

The B&B rooms are located in the main house. They are accessed by 3 steps from the garden path to the house and the rooms are at first floor level up a flight of stairs.

The cottages are accessed by a network of footpaths with no steps.

No cottage is more than 20 metres from the driveway. Solar lighting marks out the footpaths and there are sensor lights outside each cottage. There is a step (15cm) into each cottage. Dove Lawn is accessed from a patio which has a 20 cm step.

All cottages are located on the ground floor although the Poolside cottage has a split-level arrangement for one of the bedrooms.

All the floors within the cottages are carpeted, tiled or covered with laminate flooring.

Every cottage has a bathroom with toilet located on the ground floor.

All internal doors are between 66 and 73cm wide.

The living spaces have sofas and chairs with arms.

The dining tables and chairs are of uniform height.

All the bathrooms have mixer showers over the baths except Secret Garden and Rowan tree which have a shower cubicle.

The baths in Dove Lawn, Poolside and Rowan Tree have handles to aid access in and out. Non-slip shower mats are available.

TRAVEL TO THE ISLANDS

We strongly advise you contact Isles of Scilly Travel if you have mobility issues or specific needs.

Visitors are not encouraged to bring vehicles to the Islands. There is plenty of public and private transport on the Islands and St Mary’s is only 3 miles long and a mile wide at its widest point. Electric buggies can also be hired (conditions apply).

CATERING & EATING OUT

The nearest local cafes are about 10-15 minutes’ walk. These cafés are open during the day time six or seven days a week in the season. Some also serve evening meals but not every night. Most restaurants serving evening meals are about 30 minutes’ walk; 5-minute taxi ride or a 9-minute bus ride.

GROCERY SUPPLIES

The Co-operative Store delivers groceries to the cottages free of charge within certain time periods.   You can also order food boxes to be delivered from Scilly Food Boxes, and ready made meals from Tanglewood Kitchen.

MOBILE NETWORKS

Some mobile networks work better on the Islands than others, generally we have found that Vodafone works best. At Carnwethers the signal strength for some networks is better towards the front of the main house, but it depends on signal strength at any particular time. Urgent phone calls can be made from the land-line in the main house.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The Community Bus runs during the season a timetable is available in each cottage. The bus stop is about 3 minutes from Carnwether's on the main road. Local taxis are available for hire at a competitive rate.  Access for wheelchairs is limited.

ISLAND-TO-ISLAND

One of the “things to do” on Scilly is to island hop. This might prove difficult for those with limited mobility due to the steps on the quay and “climbing” on to the “tripper boats”. Having said that, the boatmen will do their best to help. Also some paths on the off islands are often unmade and/or sandy. If you feel unable to island hop, then we are pleased to say that St Mary’s still has much of offer for a holiday in its own right!

AGE CONCERN BUZZA BUS

If you are from Cornwall and registered with Age Concern, then you will entitled to use the ‘Buzza Bus’ service on St Mary’s.

ELECTRIC BUGGES

The Island Cart Company also hires out electric buggies.
